Phuket is on every travellers bucket list. Nestled in the Andaman sea, the island vibes, brilliant blue waters and cheerful locals drive many visitors every year. It’s a special place to discover a love for Thailand, the island is unique in having something for everyone. It’s popular as a destination for those who want a party escape as much as a family who wants to explore nature, culture and beaches.

Phuket is larger than some of the other islands that can be visited in Thailand and thus there are a few areas you can choose to base yourself in. If you have a long term rental in Phuket it can be a great way to discover a little bit of them all.

Here’s our guide to some of the popular areas to be:

1. Patong

This is by far the most popular tourist spot. With Bangla road, surrounding malls and rows of street shopping and food. You won’t run out of things to do within walking distance in Patong. It’s a good place to stay if you want to be in the centre of the action, it will be busy and there will be other tourists, but you’ll never be bored. If you’re looking for convenience and excitement, renting an apartment in Patong is an excellent choice to choose. Consider The Deck Patong, right in the heart of Patong, a convenient and stylish spot to explore all of Patong and Phuket.

2. Kamala

Kamala lies to the north of Patong and still has all the conveniences with a more laid back vibe. It’s a good option if you want to venture into Patong for the nightlife or entertainment but want to fill your days with quiet beach lazing and peaceful meals. You can do all the usual watersports like jetskiing, paragliding as well as no shortage of Thai massages and beauty treatments.

3. Kata

Kata, close to Karon beach is on the west coast side of the island. A popular place for families or travellers looking to stay in a less crowded place. It has all the beauty of Phuket, with less of the crowds. You’ll find some of the island’s best restaurants here, a good choice if you love a nice dinner out and relaxed drinks. Kata is the perfect inbetween for a lively atmosphere and entertainment but less of the high energy that Patong can bring. Safe and easy to walk, it’s easy to explore without having to go too far out of the area.

4. Karon

Nestled between Patong and Kata, Karon is a popular choice for young travellers who want to be near the action but enjoy a bit of peace and quiet during the day. You’ll be spoilt by Karon beach when the sun’s out, Kata for a great meal and onwards to Patong for shopping and nightlife.

5. Rawai

For a local living experience, Rawai might be the place for you. On the southwest coast of Phuket, it’s relaxed and quiet. You’ll find winding roads that take you to some of the island’s beautiful attractions like Promthep Cape and the Big Buddha. It’s the place to sit back and soak in Thailand. You’ll be able to do things at your pace.

6. Phuket Town

Phuket Town is the city centre of Phuket, and forgoes the usual beach living with cafes, restaurants and night markets. You’ll see a different side of the island with Thalang road, lined with Portuguese inspired design and roads. You’ll walk the streets and get a mini-city experience within the island. It’s the place for you if water, sun and beaches aren’t your priority. You’ll be able to focus on a cultural immersion into Thailand. Consider staying at dcondo Mine in Phuket Town. With full facilities available, it has everything you need for a hassle-free stay.

Other Areas To Consider

Go extra idyllic with areas like Panwa or Siray, located right at the top or right at the bottom of Phuket. You’ll feel like you’re on your own island, and appreciate the stretches of beach all to yourself. Replicate eat, pray, love and take in all that sun, sea and salt have to offer.

Consider a stay at Baan Mai Khao Condo located in Mai Khao beach right at the tip of Phuket. You’ll be primed for an idyllic peaceful visit.

If you’re a golfer you might also enjoy one of the private condo’s near the Phuket Country Golf Club like The Base Uptown. Take in the swimming pool, fitness facilities and convenience of Phuket City around the corner.

Wherever you choose to be, with transport not a problem on the island, you can still choose to visit the different areas that Phuket has to offer. A long term rental in Phuket will give you the flexibility to explore the island on your terms.
