Tourist Tips for Walking Street in Pattaya

Pattaya’s Walking Street has one of the highest concentrations of nightlife and entertainment venues in the world, a barrage of debauchery that runs along the 1 km strip. Visitors to Walking Street are often blown away by the sheer chaos – it seems like it’s a carnival, rock concert, go-go bar and market crammed into one street.

There’s little room to breathe, with every building along the road hosting a nightclub, beer-bar or restaurant. Hundreds of venues literally populate the area – we’re going to break it down to you the best things to do on this neon-drenched strip.

The Basics

First, a little primer. The strip runs from Beach Road to Bali-Hi Pier. You can’t miss the entrance, where a large sign of “Pattaya Walking Street” greets you. Bear in mind that this area is highly popular, so it’s best to take a taxi since parking at night is impossible.

There’s not much to do during the day since the roads are open for vehicles to pass through - the best time to visit is after 6 pm.

The Bars

There’s something for every taste here. While the main attraction of Walking Street is undoubtedly the Go-Go bars, there are plenty of open-air venues that serve cocktails, play live music and host Muay Thai fights every night of the week. Abbe’s bar is a fantastic spot to enjoy a beer, especially for a sports game. If you want to see some of Thailand’s best cover bands, head to The Blues Factory Pattaya. The venue is very popular amongst the older crowd and tourists who just want to enjoy a drink, listen to some tunes without the hassle of the bar-girls.

Blue Sky is another live music venue we recommend, especially if you’re just after a laid-back drink amidst the chaos of Walking Street before going back to your Pattaya apartment. Into a little head-banging? Hot Tuna Bar is where bands will play rock favorites on the heavier side – good for the younger crowd and tourists.

The Night Clubs

Club Insomnia is without question the most popular night club in Pattaya and Walking Street. There are two levels, with the ground floor a little more laid back and home to a pool table. Upstairs, it’s a full on night club with coyote dancers and a bustling crowd that’s packed with tourists and Thais alike.

You can’t miss the iconic Walking Street Club, which has a big red car on top of the entrance. It’s a great place to relax, play pool and mingle with the locals. Mixx Discotheque is a fancier sort of nightclub that has a Bangkok counterpart. It’s a bit more upmarket than the rest, but there are plenty of drink promotions most nights of the week.

The Restaurants

Don’t want to eat in at your Pattaya condo or hotel? Why not come to Walking Street Pattaya. The most popular restaurants here are the seafood joints, many of which are reputed and established for over 30 years. There’s something for every budget and taste – not surprising, given the sheer number of tourists that visit the strip from all around the world.

King Seafood and Food Fair Seafood Restaurant are your best bets for some classic Thai seafood. The prices are reasonable and you’ll get a large selection of succulent lobster, crab, fish and prawns, perfect for a family dinner.  For a more upscale experience, La Notte is a popular European establishment with a fantastic wine and drinks menu. The food is contemporary Franco-Italian, and has a beautiful seafront location.

Don’t forget the dozens of street vendors scattered all around the strip, serving everything from Roti Waan to Phad Thai.

The Street

There’s so much action just walking along this strip that you’ll get enough stimulation without actually entering a nightclub! Street performers will be all around, from dancers and mimes to people on stilts. You’ll also be able to see crowds drawing to watch Muay Thai fights at the kick boxing ring, halfway into the street. A walk down and back will present you with some truly iconic experiences.

You can have your portrait drawn by fantastic artists in 10 minutes. There’ll be dozens of opportunities for photographs with the bar-girls, entertainers and lady boys. Step into one of the many pharmacies to buy herbs and supplements at incredibly cheap prices. Whatever you’re into, you’ll find it in Walking Street.
