They’ve undoubtedly seen all the photos of the drinking and people dousing each other with the colourful, out-sized water guns that seem to appear out of nowhere whenever the Songkran festival rolls around every year.

Here are 5 things to remember before enjoying Songkran on Khao San Road. All of them together will help you enjoy your Songkran experience on Khao San Road and leave you with memories that you’ll enjoy retelling to your friends back home.

Here are 5 thing to remember before enjoying Songkran on Khao San Road

1. Be aware of your safety

Being in Khao san road for Songkran, you don’t need to worry about car accidents as the roads will be blocked to make way for people to walk. However, you can easily get distracted by so many things going on at the same time. With hundreds and thousands of people attending Songkran at Khao san road, you are bound to face with some of the not so good guys so always be aware of your surroundings as well as your belongings. But on the bright side, this is the chance to make many new friends from around the world especially the locals.

2.Don’t worry about food, there are plenty for you to buy along the way

After the hectic water fight, undoubtedly you’ll be hungry and exhausted thus finding food to eat is going to be your first priority. At Khao san road you have everything you need, from street vendors selling their famous go to dishes such as the Thai omelette or Pad Krapow (Thai stir fry pork with basil) to different drinks such as tea and soda for you to buy. Just be sure not bring your water fights to these street vendors, as it would be dangerous as well as causing damages to them.

3.The Police are There to Ensure Everyone has Fun

You’ll probably notice a large police presence when you arrive on Khao San Road. Don’t worry, the police are simply there to ensure everyone has fun and nobody gets hurt. Khao San Road is one of the main hot-spots for water fights in Bangkok and the police simply want to ensure that everyone enjoys themselves. If you have a problem, simply approach one of the police officers on duty. They’ll be glad to help.

4.Stay at the Ends of the Street if You’re Getting Tired

Khao San Road is relatively short thoroughfare, open to traffic at both ends. During Songkran, both ends will be blocked off to traffic. This means that if you’re getting tired and want to get out of the water battle, a good place to be is at either end of the road. This way you can just walk around the traffic barricades, be out of the action and take a break.

5. Transportation

Be prepare to come early as there could be some delays due to the huge amount of crowds trying to get into Khao san road. It is best to take a Taxi as it is safer than motorbikes during the festival. During the evening it might be a bit tricky to get a taxi due to the amount of people waiting or you could take a ride on Thailand’s famous Tuk-tuk, it’s fast and you might even be dry once you arrived at your destination. Another alternative would be to find a rental place to stay nearby where you can easily walk to.

The Songkran festival is a lot of fun and you should take the events in your stride and with a good sense of humour. Expect to be wet, even if you don’t want to be. Keep a smile on your face and enjoy the festival and spectacle. Remember, plenty of your friends would be envious to be where you are at that moment.

Rental for the Holidays has plenty of accommodations in the Khao San Road area for people that still want to participate and enjoy the spectacle of Songkran but who have outgrown the backpacker lifestyle of hostel living.
